Quadrilles – Jigsaw Technique

Quadrilles Jigsaw Technique

The A-Side of this single is a spritely Math-y skip down a woodland path, this London-based three piece know how to craft nifty little numbers, this one giddily chirruping along towards stammering, twiddly instrumental choruses. Halfway through a vocal pipes up, a dry sing-song nursery rhyme that becomes a repeated cry of the first word of the title, part bullying, part anthem in a peculiar fashion.

B-Side Bobcat Goldthwait is heavier on the lyrics, singing about ‘drugs and guns’ before wandering into a tongue-in-cheek chorus barking ‘Let me join the Academy!’ as they refer to the titular actor’s turns in the 80s comedy franchise. For a while it saunters around the edges of Baxter Dury-territory before settling on something closer to the off-kilter pop swagger of Foals hooting the title a few times before ambling to a close.

A very slight and slightly disappointing pair of tunes from the previously intriguing Quadrilles, the tracks seem less wild and woolly with the arch lyrics shifting focus away from their arch instrumentation. Their sound remains pleasing to the lughole, but seems to have had the ragged edges planed down to something a bit easier to swallow rather than an awkward lump to really chew on.
