Lizzy Grant a.k.a. Lana Del Rey is very much the latest buzz musician. She’s been quoted by Pitchfork, The Guardian and the Daily Mail, recently performed on Jools Holland, and worked with Richard Russell, Damon Albarn and Bobby Womack. Such are the heights she’s been propelled to in a few short months; you have to question quite how she’s managed it. Lana may be billed as the artist that bloggers “love to hate” and her press is undeniably defensive, but it seems her Audrey Hepburn snarl has caught the nation between the eyes.

It all started with a song – or rather, a video. “Video Games” first hit our laptops in August and since then it’s totted up nearly 2,500,000 views on YouTube. Not bad for a make shift collage of Americana scenes and Lana singing to a pure white backdrop. Perhaps – more so than its artistic values – it’s the sobriety of her music that’s done the trick. Sat between nostalgia and a morbid, resigned sadness, “Video Games” is the ultimate slap in the face reaction to the 80s obsessed beach wave that flooded Britain through the summer.

Born and raised in New York, Lana’s currently based in London and will tour the UK in November. Check here for dates.

  1. There’s very definitely quality in there. I wonder if the bloggers are miffed because they didn’t discover her first, singing upstairs in a pub ?

  2. Just a pedantic point of correction. The You Tube for Video Games was originally on You Tube this spring, not August and has been floating around some of the smaller blogs since about May.

You make a great point about how apparently she’s the act that bloggers love to hate and yet the majority have been supportive. For once the indie bloggers and mainstream public seem to be in agreement – that with Video Games Del Rey has produced a divine piece of music. There are of course a few cynics but by and large these are hipster snobs. There are some negative comments about Del Rey on a couple of American Blogs (Hipster Run Off and a highly cynical podcast on We Listen For You) but this negativity is aimed at her physical appearance and way that her music has apparently ‘come from nowhere’ – which it hasn’t – she played a gig at CMJ back in 2008!

    1. Woops, sorry! I was going off the upload date but I guess I didn’t consider the possibility of a REupload.

From the perspective of a British audience, I think she’s rised to fame very fast. Not that it’s concerning, because she’s not branded herself DIY or given any inclination to indie morals, but she must have some serious PR head honcho to get onto Jools Holland with a bat of the eye. Until maybe a month ago no one over here had heard of her, industry bods included. Now you can stop people on the street! It’s bizarre.

  3. Thanks for the correction Duncan. However I guess the point was that her rise has been fast. Of course artists and their nascant releases/videos, are usually swirling around for months on certain blogs beforehand. It’s just unusual for someone to cross over these days. I note she has a tope ten hit maybe the Jools appearance helped too huh?! It just goes to show there’s alot of great stuff bubbling below the surface, that certain music media in this country isn’t giving a platform too for one reason or another.

  4. Video Games is undoubtedly one of the best songs to come out of anywhere this year. It’s funny though, when I was getting the press for the song they were leading with the double a-side Blue Jeans as the track to listen to.
