The Indecent, Stella Marconi, Grim Dylan @ O2 Academy, Islington, London – 01/10/11

Bo’s last strum rang in our ears. The crowd were silent. I looked up at my mum’s beaming face; my own mouth twitching into a smile. Then the crowd erupted in screams and applauds of joy. For only a handful of people they really were very loud. The faces of The Indecent were a mixture of nervousness and happiness. I don’t think they realise how good they are, they really were amazing.

It’s quite funny because this ended up being the best day of my life although the entire week leading up to this show was horrendous. Firstly, having unreliable postmen delivering/ sorting out your post. My tickets came when I was at school so I couldn’t sign for them so I had to re- schedule them to be redelivered on Friday when I had a day off. But by Wednesday, the post people couldn’t actually find my package. I think it was then that I must have just deflated and given up. However after a good talking to from my mum, I persisted with the help of James Bagshaw from Stella Marconi to get them re-delivered for Friday.

I was so happy when the tickets arrived and was just looking forward to the gig when my friend Melissa cancelled because she managed to get herself grounded AGAIN. I actually broke down then and decided I wasn’t going at all. So it must have been 6:20pm and I’m still sitting in my bedroom when the doors to the gig had already opened. I really didn’t want to go by myself but when I thought of how much trouble me and everyone else had gone through just to get the tickets, I decided to just go.

My mum (Chenaii) was really surprised when I said I was going by myself because I’m quite a shy person so prefer to be surrounded by loads of friends than be on my own. My amazing mum took her ill self up and said she’d meet me later. Luckily for me I live 15mins away from the O2 academy so I still got there before it started. However those 15mins must have been the worse minutes of my life. I remember thinking ‘What the hell am I doing’, ‘I can still go back home’. But when I say I’m going to do something, I usually do it so I persevered.

I was actually shocked when I got there, as I’ve never actually been to O2 academy, it was really small and there were only a small handful of people there, many of them teens. I actually thought I was in the wrong place but since  NME radio was blasting out from the speakers I figured it must be. At least I knew I should be able to get some decent pics coz I’m actually small. It was also weird coz the bands were literally centimetres from you just hanging out which you wouldn’t get at a bigger gig. It made the gig even better because it was more intimate.

Grim Dylan were the warm up act. That was weird in its self because I’d never actually heard of them and usually know who people are before I go to see them. They are a grunge/punk rock all girl trio band. Unfortunately Ro had a broken foot so she couldn’t play but Nick from the Indecent stepped in on drums. They were, to my surprise as I don’t really listen to grunge, really good. Nick was awesome; he managed to learn the songs the night before. It was a shame their set wasn’t very long.

There was a 20-30min interval. The crowd were starting to get livelier as they edged their way closer to the stage. Stella Marconi were the supporting act. They are an alternative/indie band. This was more my sort of music so I was instantly more excited plus I’d already listened to the E.P numerous amounts of time. I personally really liked their 3rd song “Shockwave” and they also covered Johnny B Goode which everyone clearly enjoyed by all. You could tell the energy levels were going up because people were singing along and tapping their feet.

Although the other two bands were good, you could tell most people were there to see The Indecent and more people arrived just before they went on stage. Funnily enough my mum actually arrived then too. Even more surprisingly I was really happy to see her! The Indecent brought the house down. The mood had just completely changed. The crowd had moved right in front of the stage and were really rocking out.

I managed to get some opinions of how the gig went.

Claudia J Landa: “It was great, not many people but I liked that, we got to meet all of the indecent properly and they were one of the nicest bands I’ve ever met, they really care about their fans. The support bands were great, especially Stella Marconi and The Indecent’s actual set was fantastic. Emily has a brilliant voice and was even better live, overall great night!”

Jack Charter: “I had an awesome time, grabbed my Birdshit EP (which is sensational), downed a vodka and redbull and poked all the band just to make sure they were real, perhaps drunkenly gushing out that I’d been waiting for a band like them since I was 13. Overall they were amazing.”

I can actually say that this was the best day of my life and although I always say it, I actually mean it this time!
