GIITTV Writer’s Best of 2011 [Part 3] Albums 10-1

9. Girls – ‘Father, Son, Holy Spirit’ [True Panther Sounds]

‘The greatness – and it is greatness – of ‘Father, Son and Holy Ghost‘ won’t hit you straight away. On first listen, it feels unremarkable, familiar even; as if you’ve heard these songs before. But the genius of the album is how easily it settles into your personal lexicon. It’s ageless. And it’s from this vantage point that isolated instances of genius – the introduction of a gospel choir in ‘Vomit‘, the insistent ‘Me, me, me, me, me, me!‘ in ‘Honey Bunny‘ – become some of the most visceral moments in music this year. – Duncan Vicat-Brown
