Preaching from the Pews: D.E.A.D.

Preaching from the Pews: D.E.A.D.

The first release of GM Sounds is the second LP from mysterious Dutch Doom Dub producer D.E.A.D.

S.T.I.L.L. D.E.A.D. is a remarkable LP of music that won’t find its audience until the world catches up. It is post-digital dub, a genre itself not quite at the prominence it deserves despite having extremely vibrant scenes in random pockets of the globe – from the Mungo’s Hi-fi led scene in Glasgow to the increasingly legendary Jahtari-records led digidub scene in Germany.

So yes, D.E.A.D. is ahead of time. He is pioneer of doom dub – a sound that takes traditional dub, recreates them through analogue systems, then transforms them into something mindblowingly evil. S.T.I.L.L. D.E.A.D. is the product of someone so sick and twisted, so brilliant, that his sound sucks all the life out of your world.

Between opening track Pong Yang, lead track Microwave and the fantastic Pookie, there is enough darkness to make a suicide contemplator realise their life isn’t all that bad. If the same person listens to closing track Black, they’ll find the irony in this being the light at the end of a dark tunnel – a mesmerising carnival of sound – a wry smile for joy and the ultimate reward for being plunged so deeply into music that really doesn’t have a place in the world outside of deepest, darkest winter.
