Track Of The Day #568: The Pop Group – Colour Blind

Today we have what is quite probably the OLDEST Track of the Day we have featured here at GIITTV towers. ‘Colour Blind’ now has a video 34 years after its original release coming from Post-punks The Pop Group from Bristol. ‘Colour Blind’ is manifested by dexterous cut up funky post punk rhythm strewn with Mark Stewart’s fractured croak that stares bleakly into the abyss of dystopia one minute, switching to almost manic and loose limbed the next, framed by jagged guitars riffs that are the sound of smashing shards of glass. Mark Stewart poetically reflects that the song was “a glimpse of the unknown / soaring wonderlust mixed with existential teenage angst / from the boys whose heads exploded.”

The Pop Group’s initial years were a intriguing, vitriolic assault on the senses where they transplant the mid point between the twitching vitriolic social commentary of PiL and the urgent post punk funkiness of Gang of Four. ‘Colour Blind’ is lifted from their 1980 album ‘We Are Time’ that is being re-issued alongside a new compilation ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’ on 20th October.

The accompanying video is a intriguing visual feast for the eyes. The creator of the piece, New York artist Rupert Goldsworthy commented: “It’s the sound of a teenager trying to figure their way through the awkwardness of adolescent desires. The song’s video tags these emotive cues with visual snips that mimic its keening tones, its Pere Ubu-like crooning wail, and the production’s swoop and gyre, and its staccato boogie rhythms.”

To coincide with the reissue, a seven–day UK tour will kick off on October 20th.
