Track of the Day #713: The Dears – I Used To Pray For The Heavens To Fall

untitled (251)Canada’s The Dears have returned with their first new music since 2011’s Degeneration Street album. ‘I Used To Pray For The Heavens To Fall’ is a truly epic taster for the band’s new album Times Infinity Volume 1, which we are promised will be followed by a Volume 2 shortly afterwards.

The Dears have been led by Murray Lightburn for 20 years now, and he is as compelling a front man as you are ever likely to come across, with his voice 7 parts Damon Albarn to 3 parts Morrissey. This track has a huge, widescreen sound full of orchestral sweeps and dramatic flourishes, and comes complete with a truly affecting ‘lyric video’ featuring a cartoon beetle called Hercules. You could imagine it accompanying a Radiohead track.

‘I Used To Pray For The Heavens To Fall’  is a glorious return and augers well for the album.
