Track Of The Day #785: MALKA – Wonder Why

malka__largeThe description of MALKA as an ‘Experimental alt-pop songstress’ might raise an eyebrow or both, but the first play (of many) shows this to be a particularly apt description of her music.

MALKA is Tamara Schlesinger, who first made waves on the music scene as the frontwoman of acclaimed alt-folk collective 6 Day Riot. Now putting all her considerable creative energy into MALKA, her new single ‘Wonder Why’ is a dancefloor classic in the making. It draws on Asian influences, but this is no worthy ‘world music’, but rather music that deserves to be heard across the world.

Clocking in at less than three minutes, there’s a call and response chant throughout the record that a million R&B divas would kill for. Like all the best pop music, it’s irresistible and when it stops, without having outstayed its welcome, you can’t but long for it to keep going.

Addictive, fun and impossible to listen to without wanting to dance, even if you can’t dance to save yourself.
