Wolf Solent – EP // 3 (Sea Records)

Just less than two years ago Danny Trew Barton – the man who is Wolf Solent – set out from the confines of his York bedroom on a musical journey that would eventually take him half-way around the globe to Shimokitazawa in Tokyo.  His first staging post came along with the release of the Lifeboat EP  and a year later EP // 2 followed, further advancing his kaleidoscopic vision of the world.  And then EP // 3 took him to Japan where he recorded his latest seven-track collection of distorted neo-psychedelic bliss.

It has been a long, strange and beautiful trip, one where Barton has joined those cosmic dots that separate the debris of Syd Barrett‘s latter-day sonic misadventures from the melodic narcosis of Spiritualized.  He has taken the essence of the former Pink Floyd frontman’s acid casualty vignettes – those half-realised songs that were to eventually appear on Opel – and crystallised them into something altogether more cogent and real.

To achieve this degree of coherence Barton has rounded a sphere of influence that draws upon the nascent psychedelia of The BeatlesRevolver album, electronic minimalism, the Twilight Zone, proto-punk pop and an eternal belief in the healing powers of reverb. It all makes for essential listening.
