Track Of The Day #836: William Tyler – Gone Clear

Modern Country is the forthcoming album from William Tyler. It is the follow-up to the Nashvillian guitarist and composer’s 2014 release, the highly acclaimed Lost Colony. The genesis of the new record can be located in Tyler’s recent solo tour which stretched over two years and saw him driving back and forth across the vast expanse of his home country.

‘Gone Clear’ – the first full-length track to be aired from the album – captures perfectly Tyler’s acute sense of time and space. In it he marries the memories of classic country music to the repetitive rhythms of Krautrock. It is a sound that conjoins at an intersection between George Jones, Johnny Paycheck and the more recently departed Merle Haggard and those 70’s German bands La Düsseldorf, Harmonia and Neu!

‘Gone Clear’ is a page torn from a longer love letter to a lost generation. At a time when his country’s Presidential campaign descends into evermore frightening farce, Tyler posts a wonderful reminder of everything that is still so beautiful about America, its culture and wide-open, half-forgotten countryside.

Modern Country will be released on 10th June 2016 via Merge Records
