On 27th May, North East hip hop duo Ceiling Demons are releasing their new EP Belly of the Hopeless on DIY imprint Frux Tapes. Produced and mastered by self-styled “barely-rappers” Outside Your House, the six-track EP combines the duo’s unapologetically northern rhymes with experimental soundscapes and trip-hop elements. Opener ‘Stones’ epitomises the record’s more challenging sound, combining atmospheric beats with a repeated, fractured organ motif as the Demons themselves exchange lines exploring the nature of the psyche in free-flowing verses.
The accompanying video, created by Callum Scott-Dyson, sees the duo inhabiting a stop-motion world, which member Psy describes as “Demons meets The Clangers.” Rendered crudely in plasticine, the masked pair roam an almost childlike landscape of paintings, where things quickly descend into a somewhat surreal voyage through the mind. It even ends with a UFO coming to suck the very essence out of one of the dwellers. It’s almost the perfect visual representation of what Ceiling Demons are aiming for with Belly of the Hopeless.
