VIDEO PREMIERE: Field Harmonics – Heron

UK duo Field Harmonics release their second album Corners today (Friday 20 May 2016) via Wayside and Woodland Recordings. Field Harmonics are a Midlands-based band who craft sleek electro-pop soundscapes that are redolent of the likes of Chromatics, M83 and early Pet Shop Boys and lace them with 19 year old singer Bryony William’s emotive wistful vocals.

At the knobs and dials is producer Rob Glover of ambient pop experimentalists epic45 fame, and together with Field Harmonics they create affecting eletro-pop tunes of magnificent melancholic quality. We are lucky enough to have the premiere of their new video ‘Heron’

Rob Glover of Field Harmonics explains the concept behind the video and song:

“The concept for the ‘Heron’ music video has a history dating back almost 2 years.

In 2014, my partner (Angela Slater, director of ‘Heron’ video) and I starting writing a non-dialogue short film (currently in pre-production), loosely based around themes of mental illness, death and childhood.

A heron acts as a harbinger and catalyst for certain narrative shifts and tragic events throughout the story.

Whilst working on lyrics for a new Field Harmonics song in summer 2015, Angela suggested I use the narrative ideas from the film as a starting point; and that approach very quickly produced a wealth of material for me to use.

I applied a stream of consciousness method and didn’t get too hung up on the metering or flow of the words. Bryony Williams (lead singer in Field Harmonics) swiftly sub-edited my words into a more abstract but poetic form – playing with the chronology of the short film narrative to pick out some of the key themes.

After ‘Heron’ was mooted as a possible single for Field Harmonics, Angela started to develop ideas for the music video. She soon hit upon the notion of it acting as a kind of coda to the short film story, and we follow a lone character as she discovers symbolic objects which are significant to the original ‘Heron’ story, and replaces these found objects with a single flower.

As a further piece of continuity, we decided the cast the girl that features on the cover of the ‘Corners’ album as the lead character in the video, the super-talented Bethan Gilmore.

Further to this, the artist who created the album cover, Thomas Miles, also came on board to work with Angela on art direction and visual design and was invaluable in the whole filming process”
