Track of the Day #907: Phantom Runners – First Time

It’s been a whole year since Adam Al-Hilali (or ADAL) released any music under the Phantom Runners name.  As the old adage says, though, good things come to those who wait.  His collaborative “future-pop” project are back with a new single, ‘First Time,’ and he’s lost none of his contagious touch.

As its name suggests, ‘First Time’ is shot through with an innocent edge, detailing the first rush of blossoming love.  It’s shot through with 80s synth tones echoing Michael Jackson at his sweetest but things get funked up with a jangly guitar.  The power-ballad tones of guest vocalist Brooke Bailey are reminiscent of Whitney Houston and give ‘First Time’ an earthy, more emotive edge.  It’s not all retro, though; the polished production keeps the track firmly in the 21st Century.  As Pulp once famously sang, “do you remember the first time?”  This probably wasn’t what Jarvis and co had in mind, but this is one ‘First Time’ you won’t forget.

‘First Time’ is out now.
