Track Of The Day #930: We Three And The Death Rattle – I See Static

Back with a vengeance after a two-year hiatus, Leicester’s We Three And The Death Rattle have managed to maintain all the urgency that permeated their debut album W.T.A.T.D.R. while ramping up the heat with the irresistible groove of lead single ‘I See Static‘.

Driven by a boisterous rhythm reminiscent of Adorable‘s classic 1992 single ‘Homeboy‘, the immaculate Amy Cooper sings “This is an oil slick of trouble and mud/This is a magic trick with flowers and blood,” before the lyrics take a bizarre Tom Waits-like twist on the second verse: “I see robots with plastic rocks/A mutinous mess of pen and paper/I got sea legs, hymns and horse heads/One foot on the accelerator.

With Amy once again flawlessly backed by the rhythm section of brothers Jon (guitar) and Andy Bennett (drums), the track builds to a breathtaking climax and provides a tantalising taste of just how impressive the trio’s forthcoming second album promises to be.

I See Static‘ is at once dramatic and exciting, lying somewhere between the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Elastica, but at least three times as good as you would expect that to sound.

In terms of the band’s longevity, on this evidence, I don’t think we’ll be needing to shake that death rattle just yet…
