PREVIEW: forthcoming shows in Leeds from High & Lonesome

PREVIEW: forthcoming shows in Leeds from High & Lonesome

It is already looking like business as usual for High & Lonesome in the New Year. After a highly successful 2016, one that included some great shows from Gill Landry, Daniel Norgren, Hiss Golden Messenger and many more besides, as well as the third edition of their rather wonderful annual festival – High & Lonesome 2016 – the Leeds-based promoter has once more put together an exciting programme of live music for the first part of 2017.

Margo Price gets the High & Lonesome year rolling in some considerable style on the 25th of January. Five months after her last appearance there, the American country singer from Nashville, Tennessee makes a most welcome return to the Brudenell Social Club. Her brilliant debut solo album Midwest Farmer’s Daughter was released on Third Man – the label run by Jack White and his associates – and promptly went top 10 in the Billboard country chart. This show promises to be something rather special.

Three nights later High & Lonesome takes us a few hundred yards down the road to the intimate surroundings of the Hyde Park Book Club for the launch of B. W. Pike’s new album, A Burdensome Year.  An integral part of the local music scene for a number of years now, Ben Pike will be joined on the night in this 50 person capacity venue by Mr CD Wallum & Dariush Kanani Music.

Come February and it is back to the Brudenell for Lewis & Leigh. Al Lewis from Wales and Alva Leigh from Mississippi first began writing together in 2014 and it is a collaboration that saw the release in August of last year of their excellent debut album Ghost. The Leeds date on the 9th of February forms part of Lewis & Leigh’s extensive Keep Your Ghost tour.

The following night, the Canadian singer-songwriter Andy Shauf will bring his quite gorgeous take on baroque-pop to the Brudenell. The Party – his fourth full-length album – was released in May of last year to great critical acclaim.

By the 5th of March it is time to head into Leeds city centre and the Oporto bar on Call Lane, for appearing there will be Marty O’Reilly with support from special guests Lilac’s Daughter & Daniel Hawke. Located in Santa Cruz, California, O’Reilly is a master of acoustic folk, blues and soul. Another High & Lonesome show that is one not to be missed.

Just over a fortnight later and it is back to the Brudenell to catch New Orleans’ Hurray For The Riff Raff on a tour that takes in the UK, Europe and their US homeland in support of the their new album The Navigator, which will be released on 10th March via ATO Records.  Here is a little taste of what to expect on what will be yet another cracking night in west Leeds:

And then on the 27th of April in a joint venture with York’s Please Please You the Brudenell once more opens its doors, this time to the seven-piece Gypsy Folk Rock band  Holy Moly & the Crackers.
