Track Of The Day #983: Park Hotel – Gone As A Friend

Take a throbbing beat,  add a supple baseline, and lace with sinuous synths London outfit Park Hotel lay the groundwork for their debut single ‘Gone As A Friend’ a deliciously artful slab of noirish disco pop.   Upon this undulating foundation, they layer icy cool  boy/girl vocal interplay that struts into the middle of the dance floor and does a guilty soft-shoe shuffle to the early hours, dipped in the realisation that at some point this all has to end and we’ll go into the night on our separate ways, and you may not see each other ever again.

Anchored by Tim Abbey’s elongated notes, chopping guitars and singalong refrains (“I think you can do it better/To them it’s just a money thing” ) and counterbalanced by Rebeca Marcos-Ros ‘s alluringly push and pulling interjections.Like the crafty beats meets guitars of LCD Soundsystem or The Rapture gleefully working their moves with the playfulness of CSS and Talking Heads. Sumptuous, danceable pop to the early hours, now where did I hide my party shoes?

Park Hotel play London’s Lexington  February, this Thursday 16 February 2017.
