French experimental pop artist Frank Rabeyrolles‘s new single ‘Drowned’ is bathed in a reassuringly woozy retro electro bedroom produced sound. Its dimpling beat, modular synths and samples are laced with a pared back meditative soulful melodies led by Frank and backed by a female accomplice. Both familiar, evocative and mysterious it’s ripe with echoes of everyone from the warm analogue meets melody of Giorgio Moroder to the minimalist melancholia of OMD and the subtlety of early M83. It’s fondly reminiscent of the defunct technology of the past and at the heart of a longing for escapism.
It’s paired with an apt video that perfectly chimes with these themes. Depicting a skeletal x-ray of the first nascent VHS tape recorders and compact disc manufacture of the 1980s, its intercut with affectingly artful home video imagery.Watch the video premiere above.
