Video Of The Week #128: Cantaloupe – The Flood feat Sophia Pettit (Night Flowers)

Cantaloupe release ‘The Flood’, the latest single from their second album Error States, via Hello Thor Records this Friday (9th August). Today, we premiere the evocative and vivid accompanying visual, watch it above.

‘The Flood’ – featuring vocals by Sophia Pettit of transatlantic quintet Night Flowers – is a gorgeously shimmering and pulsing electronic pop cut, underscored by the emotional flood that follows the birth of a child.

Songwriter and Cantaloupe synth man John Simson explains the inspiration behind the single:

“Most of the lyrics I’ve written over the last two records aren’t really about my life – whilst they might draw inspiration from my experiences, they’re more supposed to act as sketches of the drudgery of the here and now, or dreams of imagined futures. However, during the writing of Error States my partner and I experienced some monumental changes: struggle, pain, loss, and eventually the joy of birth.

Fertility problems and miscarriages are incredibly common, but almost never openly talked about. Parenthood is completely fucking nuts, and whilst people do share their experiences of it much more, it’s hard to express the blinding fear before the event or the overwhelming flood of love and confusion after it. These lyrics are an attempt to put some of those experiences and feelings in to words. It also somewhat clumsily tries to acknowledge the extraordinary strength of women in general, and to pay tribute to my incredible partner in particular.”

The digital single release is accompanied by a remix from game_program, AKA Cowtown singer/guitarist and Hookworms/Nope drummer Jonathan Nash, and his ongoing exploration of pre-digital electronic hardware.

Error States – released at the end of 2018 – “is nine tracks of inventive, infectious synth pop; overflowing with ideas; a bit battered by life, but ultimately still full of hope and love.”

Cantaloupe’s record label – DIY indie Hello Thor Records – recently celebrated its 10th anniversary with two massive parties in Nottingham, and announced that it would be coming to a close this year.

Error States by Cantaloupe is available on limited edition vinyl from www.hellothor.limitedrun.com and on digital from all the usual places.
