Neneh Cherry is marking the 30th anniversary of her classic debut album Raw Like Sushi with new super deluxe editions of the record. The hugely influential album, which blended funk, dance and new jack swing, has been remastered at Abbey Road and is being re-issued in various formats, including triple-CD and heavyweight vinyl box sets. The new editions of the record will be released on January 31st 2020.
1989’s Raw Like Sushi will also be re-issued on special edition alternative gold vinyl and on single CD and vinyl formats and be available digitally. Kevin Saunderson’s 1989 remix of ‘Buffalo Stance’ has just been made available to stream and download to mark the announcement. The box sets are to include a 12×12 book with photos, interviews about the album, liner notes and memorabilia.
Co-produced by Tim Simenon, Mark Saunders, Cherry’s husband Cameron McVey, Jonny Dollar and others, Raw Like Sushi spawned four UK top ten singles, including ‘Buffalo Stance’ (#3), ‘Manchild’ (#5), ‘Kisses on the Wind’ (#20) and ‘Inner City Mama’ (#31). ‘Manchild’ was produced by Robert ‘3D’ Del Naja of Massive Attack, whose remixes form part of the bonus material. Remixes by Arthur Baker, Smith N Mighty and David Morales also appear. Cherry and McVey’s daughter Mabel has scored a string of UK top 40 hits since 2017.
Cherry has issued four studio albums since Raw Like Sushi, including 2018’s Four Tet-produced Broken Politics.
