Video Of The Week #161: Pillow Queens – Handsome Wife

Glorious and anthemic, Pillow Queens’ new single ‘Handsome Wife‘ is laced with fantastically searing riffs, crashing percussion and self empowered lines delivered with big hearted harmonies and a moorish Irish twang. Pillow Queens’ bold sound swells with an epic chorus rippling with solidarity and community, referencing the hard won rights that their queer community have fought for, such as gay marriage, inclusivity and choice (“I may not be the wife you want/But I’m pregnant with the virgin tongue”). ‘Handsome Wife‘ is an awesome teaser for their debut album out this Autumn.

Fantastic all female four piece Pillow Queens return with their debut album In Waiting set for release on September 25th, the accompanying video captures moments of joy and connection.

As the band explains: “Handsome Wife begins with a glimpse into an emotional homecoming, one that intensifies and romanticises the seemingly insignificant. Throughout, the mundane but tender moments are held up and deified, paying reverence to the ease in which a love can thrive outside the realms of tradition. The song continuously references structures and rituals that were once out of reach, but are now within our grasp. In spite of this Handsome Wife affirms that they pale in comparison to the communities we’ve built ourselves.”

Pillow Queens are a firm part of Dublin’s socially conscious underground arts scene, among street artists, fashion designers, musicians and film makers, and prominently champion queer and marginalized groups within the arts. Irish four-piece (from Dublin, Wicklow and Kildare) forge a powerful noise that is all their own – but meant for everyone.
