Introducing: Gia Woods

Introducing: Gia Woods

What to say about Gia Woods to do any justice to the immense talent, ambition, and drive of this young rising star. With a bag full of fantastic songs including the new single ‘Into It’ and my personal favourite ‘Hungry’, a Calvin Klein campaign and a new EP under her belt – this is her time to shine and nothing is standing in her way. I asked her a couple of questions:

Hi, how are you today?

Hi, I’m good! I’m about to go shoot a music video, so I’m pretty excited about that.

Tell me about your new song, ‘Into It’

I wrote the song about a very co-dependent relationship that I was in. It was the kind of relationship where I was so into someone that I’d let them get away with anything, even if I knew it was toxic and unhealthy.  I feel like a lot of us have been in that situation where you know something’s wrong but you want to ignore it.

Can you tell me some more about your upcoming EP Cut Season

Cut Season is my first EP so I’m really excited to be putting it out.  Most of the songs are about the relationship I mentioned earlier.  Both about when I was in it and about the breakup itself.  After separating from someone I’d been with for four years I had to reflect a lot about what other things I needed to cut out of my life.  I feel like the EP captures a time when I grew a lot and started calling myself out.

What has your experience been like putting the EP together?

It’s given me so much perspective on the kind of person I want to be and the kind of people I want to surround myself with.  In the past, I used to make a lot of excuses for people who I had really outgrown.  I try to always see the good in people, but now I feel I have a new attitude towards valuing my time and energy.  I’m more careful about surrounding myself with the people who make me feel good and supported instead of the people who carry negative energy.

Congrats on booking the Calvin Klein Pride campaign, can you tell me more about how you booked that and what “pride” means to you?

They reached out and I was beyond excited because I’ve always been obsessed with Calvin Klein ads.  Actually my music video for ‘New Girlfriend’ was inspired by Calvin Klein.  It was a dream come true.

Pride to me means being excited to be your authentic self no matter what others think about you. Every kind of person should feel accepted and celebrated.

What’s your local music scene like?

Well, there’s a pandemic so it’s been a little dead lately… but normally LA is amazing cause everybody plays here.  I’m so grateful to live in a city where you can go anywhere and there’s always a show going on.

How would you describe your music in five words?

Dark, sensual, energetic, vulnerable, moody.

Which artists do you admire?

Thank god my older sister had good taste. She put me on to a variety of genres with different artists like Madonna, Radiohead, Green Day, M.I.A. and Gwen Stefani

What would be your dream collaboration?

I would love to do something with The Weeknd I’ve been a big fan since I first heard Trilogy. His melodies and vocal ability are insane. I also love the artists he chooses to collaborate with cause they’re some of my all-time faves like Daft Punk, Gesaffelstein, and Pharrell

What’s the best band/artist you have played with so far?

I opened for Tears For Fears at a festival last summer. It was such an amazing experience, a pretty surreal moment.

Who/What are you listening to right now?

Right now I’ve been really loving the new Purity Ring album. My favorite song off the new album is a song called ‘Star Dew‘.
