Addicted to the Wave Pictures' album. I love that feeling an album gives you, it's so good the best you can do is go and ask somebody else what music they love at the moment on the net or something..
Apples in Stereo as well. And Otis Redding, but only because I was struck by a huge lack of soul in my life so I'm desperate to fill it.
I got a wave pictures cd ages ago when they still lived in Cardiff. They reminded me of a more rougher less good lo fi hefner, their new stuff is better its true...
I'm listening a lot to a band called Derby - their new album "Posters Fade" is absolutely mind boggling. And the two new Mudhoney releases are getting a lot of spins.
This guy was supporting Jeremy Warmsley on Monday at The Social, it was nice if not monotonous, reminded me of Bon Iver I guess but not as good. I think he was just the leadsinger and Woodpigeon is the band as a whole. People talked through his set though, I think he was a little upset by it.
But, he did have to follow Three Trapped Tigers, so like he hardly stood a chance.. They were brilliant.
Try not to preach about these but blimey here's some good music around at the moment:
- the new Windsor For The Derby "How We Lost" is possibly their best album so far, very simple pop in an old Factory records vibe (so they say) but amazingly effective
- think there's already a review of the new Notwist album, though highly recommend
- Black Angels "directions to see a ghost", is, um, drone rock psychedelics, people compare them to velvet underground, the doors, BJM, but I think they're their own beast. Met a couple of them after their ICA gig and got an autograph, lovely people too.
- White Hinterland "phylactery factory", formerly Casey Deinel (who did that great cover of Cut Your Hair a while ago) has sort of reinvented herself somewhere between joanna newsome and ricky lee jones, or tori amos without the fucking annoying fans
(one more!)
- Age of Rockets "Hannah", I personally think this album is as good as/better than the Postal Service album and that is one of my favourite records EVER. Same formula, electro, pop, occasional guitars but it's braver than the latter, more risks with less chance of ben gibbard's more-sincere-than-thou voice grating on repeated listens.
SO many good records so far, it's gone from nothing for three years to monsoon season :D
Spiritualized are getting a mega listening off me as well. Saw them live last week and they were jaw droppingly amazing.
Oh, and I'm revisiting MBV's stuff, seeing as I am going to see them this month!
absolutely stunning vocalist, the myspace tracks don't do justice to them live but are still excellent
Alt Track http://www.myspace.com/alttrack
ridiculously young postrock/eletronica duo who need to get rid of the rapping but seemed precociously talented for their age. Their EP raises money for Amnesty too- fair play to them
heheh no but they all have good hair, and one of them is a girl...
I'm slowly checking out all the bands in this cool thread...
If any of you wanna send me a short paragraph and a link about an act to bill at godisinthetvzine.co.uk it will go in the new NOW HEAR THIS feature...
I'm listening to an instrumental jazz fusion band called "Pat Metheny Group" at the minute. You can find them on myspace.
It's a pretty excellent combination of like.. piano, guitar and tribal voices. They've long songs, geneally, the newest album "The Way Up" consisting of four songs, between 6 minute and 20 minute song lengths. It's not overly digestible at first but makes for great background/going to sleep to/relaxing/walking around at night music. Imo!! I'd download "Letter from Home"
crikey, Pat Methenay is veritable Jools Holland fodder, though I'm sure if you dispell his "old fart" connotations then you can actually appreciate his talent, rather than his mullet...
That "Cats in Paris" are awesome. Totally british Animal Collective, but it's also reminiscent of some sort of slightly more chaotic and ridiculous Of Montreal. I wouldn't say weirder though haha. Some of the synthier parts remind me of Stereolab as well. It's pretty awesome.
Arms and Sleepers (US) are a band I got into a while back and are currently on my post rock favourites play list. Was excited to see that they are on tour in the UK soon and despite the fact that not many people know about them I have booked them to play in Manchester (The gig plug will come later when the booking is confirmed). If any of you are into post rock then give them a listen on myspace.
I acquired 'Letters From The Underground' by The Levellers yesterday. I've been listening to it a lot.
It's good. It has a slightly monochrome tone to it in comparison to an album like say 'Levelling The Land', but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
My mistake I think they only did two albums didn't they?I think i'm getting confused one was expected when they reformed a few years back. The program feats johnny marr right?Have you tried Strangelove?I heartily reccomend them if you like early 90s indie....

I don't think I've heard Strangelove. I'll check them out asap.
Yeah 'The Program' featured Marr. It's a good album, though I reckon 'This World And Body' had catchier guitar riffs.
Cats in Paris has been in almost non-stop rotation until this week, when I've also been listening to
Elbow - Seldom Seen Kid
The Spinto Band - Moonwink
Eddie Vedder - Into the Wild.

Hi all...Music i'm currently enjoying...well, I'm actually having a nostalgia period because I haven't ran into any decent bands, but if you know of any, please let me know!

I just received a copy of "Death Magnetic" (Metallica) and it's alright. I know that kind of music is a "racket" for 89% of Londoners...but still, not bad.

I wish I listened to more good new music... maybe I'll check some of them out. I think the only new things on my radar are deerhunters new albums - and also neil youngs and the cure, but they probably wont be that good. The last thing I got was a Spacemen3 album which I have yet to listen to. but mostly on repeat for me lately has been Unwound and Original Silence.
Tora! wrote: I just received a copy of "Death Magnetic" (Metallica) and it's alright. I know that kind of music is a "racket" for 89% of Londoners...but still, not bad.
I think I'll have to get ahold of a copy of this album. I love '80s Metallica and '90s Metallica to an extent, but like most fans I found the material off 'St. Anger' to be very weak. I've heard some tracks off the new album and while it's certainly a return to style I'm still not sure if it's a return to form.
I agree with you...not a return to form. I think that, even though they can produce OK music still, they lost the plot. Some say they lost it in the Black Album, others say it was in Load. I never met anyone who liked St. Anger!!!

To be honest, I can tolerate practically ALL Metallica except 'St. Anger'. 'Black' isn't as bad as many claim. Neither is 'Load' really. They're just more straight forward. One or two riffs per song rather than seven or eight.
Recently I have been listening to:
Sleeper (US): Preparing Today For Tomorrow's Breakdown
I'm listening to the new Smiths 2cd reissue. To be honest apart from a few songs on CD2 it seems like a bit of a cash in. The much vaunted remastering sounds hardly different to the orginal mixes(well maybe cleaned up a little).Great songs, but a bit needless.I guess its useful if you have no Smiths albums and want them all in one package without Kenneth Williams on the cover but that apart....
bill have you got any of those spare? Smiths reissues?
I'm currently loving Cats in Paris still, Fleet Foxes, and TV on the Radio which is much better than I realised when I went on holiday.
No just the one copy Tim, although I could zip it up for you specifically cd2 if you're desperate? I'm doing a feature on it hopefully...
I'm listening to late of the pier, the muscle club http://www.myspace.com/themuscleclub , neil young, rufus wainwright, best of REM irs years, The Smiths 2 cd set, James dean bradfield solo album(actually better than the last two/three manics albums).
http://www.myspace.com/katiestelmanis - Bat for Lashes does mediaeval choral songs.
the new Bloc Party album
and of course Cats in Paris. I can't go 2 days without listening to it.
Having spread all 24 albums I acquired this year on the floor and deciding which made it into my top 10 (heart-rendering process) I am currently listening again to those that didn't make it in.
iForward, Russia! - Life Processes
Long Blondes - Couples
Bloc Party - Intimacy (out too late to get considered, shame)
Bloodflowerbill wrote: Well you should check out Time.Space.Repeat if you like their stuff their old album came out on that label http://www.myspace.com/timespacerepeat
Yeah, time.space.repeat are one of my faves from that label!
I'm also really getting into mysoundtracks at the moment...John Carpenter and Clint Mansell
The Beatles, Love, The Velvet Underground - Loaded, critically slated but for me it was a tremendous album. So summery and cheerful, yet with dark undertones. Perfect pop.
Also been listening to The Airborne Toxic Event's album which is really good, similar to the Gaslight Anthem's '59 sound' album.
Been listening to The View and The Franz as well. And Lily!
Just bought The Joy Formidable-"a balloon called moaning". Now on constant-epic,passion & soul combined.
Looking forward to seeing them on The Howling Bells tour.
100 Broken Windows, Murmur and In The Aeroplane Over The Sea are on constant rotation in the car on the way to work at the moment. I downloaded the Joy Formidable album, I agree it's really good.

alexsexmusic wrote: Yep. It has to be one of the best debut records ever. I really love early REM.
Yeah. What they've done in more recent years is ok, but the eighties was them at their best.
'Radio Free Europe' has to one of the best album openers of all time.

AGREED!

Aye I must get that and review it we like them lots!
Tim, AC not getting a review is my fault its a fine album, a review would be welcome!
I'm also listening to albums by Neko Case, Brontosaurus Chorus, and Heat from a dead star.
Bill I would write one but I don't feel my knowledge of AC is good enough! I wasn't aware that Panda Bear was from the same band!
Someone like Mike should do it. Or whoever did that News from Nowhere and raved about it.
hehe Simon yeah, well I'll send you the new AC single it comes with a press release which may help.
To be honest I think the new AC album is pretty different from most of their other stuff anyway it stands alone, its a fine record I've just been so busy I didn't get round to it.
Check out The Tenemants, a Glasgow band who are enjoying a Libertines-esque following for their brand of straight forward no frills guitar led indie. They're still pretty raw but they are solid and extremely talented. Good lyrics and a frontman with a voice which is akin to Pete Doherty with a Glasgow accent. You'll find them on myspace. The Tenemants, check 'em out.

The new Metric album is fab, not so sure about the YYYs album it seems a bit over produced on first look, certainly not the five stars Q have lavished upon it.
Top six pop songs as of this minute:
1. Mcalmont and Butler - Yes, 2. Michael Jackson- Bllie Jean 3. Kate Bush-Wuthering Heights, 4. Suede- We Are The Pigs 5. The Decemberists- 16 Military Wives, 6.Kirsty Mcall - New England
Tunes i'm loving at the moment: Je Suis Un Funky Homme - Marmaduke Duke, Bonkers - Dizzee Rascal, We Made You - Eminem, Number 1 - Tinchy Stryder, it's Not Fair - Lily Allen
Saw the Mars Volta at T in The Park a few years ago, total head fuck! I was wasted, it was 1 in the afternoon and I couldn't get my head round it! They were great, clearly talented, but it was like music from another planet. Next time I'll lay off the disco biscuits!
This is more on the subject of music I'm currently hating(good idea for a thread?)What is it with that Tiny Dancer Ironik/Chimpunk/Elton John beast its been in the charts for months and its the most dispicable/grating remix/mash up I've ever heard.
I've been listening to alot of older stuff recently due to lack of funds for new CD's, and watching a bit of MTV2 to keep up with what's going on out there. Enjoying The Cribs - Cheat On Me very much, Empire of The Sun, still listening to Kasabian's new one, love that.
Revisited alot of 90's hip-hop as well. LOVING NWA Niggaz4life just now, absolutely loving it! Best gangsta rap record ever made, I challenge anyone to find a better one. Onyx - Bacdafucup, Dr Dre - The Chronic, Ice Cube - Predator, Da Lench Mob - Guerrillaz in the Mist, ICE T - Original Gangster. Loving all that stuff just now.
andy_sheldon wrote: Mega City Four - Terribly Sorry Bob
Mega City Four are amazing! I'm impressed, I've never really known anyone who likes them. The debut album has just been re-released as well, on Cherry Red.
Listening-wise for me, I've just discovered an amazing post-punk act called Sad Lovers and Giants, beats most of the bigger names that so often get bandied around from that genre. Also, listening to a lot of first wave/80s electro. Plus, the new Hot Silk Pockets songs are very lovely.

I only actually discovered them a few years ago but they've basically become my new favourite band.
Did you ever check out Ipanema? They were Wiz's band in his final years. Very good.
I just listened to the new TNP single now! Ridiculously epic, was hoping for a few more peaks and troughs though? It just sort of rumbles stoically through
you reackon?I thought it was quite interesting on my first few listens, musically anyway. I thought their debut whilst good was a bit over produced compared to their demos which I in the main loved.
I'm also checking out some potential tips for 2010 including Rogues and Holly Miranda...

Oh it's interesting defintely; I like it, when I heard it was going to be 7 minutes long though I was expecting a big sort of crescendo, it feels like seperate sections just placed together; good like, but didn't really have an emotional pull, but then i've only listened to it once so far
Aye do you know its its just a single or part of an EP, a friend passed me on a link you see? We should be getting some info on the new TNP album shortly I will try and get a interview, I reackon they would be interesting subjects, one of the more interesting UK bands to emerge in the last few years. I'm currently listening to this and being very impressed:
Somewhere Safe out on limited edition cassette 8th of December!
It’s no coincidence that Jose Gonzalez’ music was dropped in favour of Tired Tape Machine for the final scene in Swedish director Mikel Cee Karlssons film Hälsningar från Skogen (the soundtrack, released on Kningdisk, also included artists like Peter Broderick and Tape). Petter Lindhagen’s one man band truly personifies the wave of new music that finds its own voice without needing vocal chords. A wave of experimental instrumental music that strikes a balance between sadness and hope, chaos and order.
On his debut album Somewhere Safe, Petter Lindhagen has single handedly written, produced and played all the instruments; a DIY-attitude that is also evident in the lovingly realized physical manifestation of the release. In tune with his entrepreneurial spirit, the album is self-released, digitally and – as the name might suggest– on cassette!
“There is a certain analogue romance that comes with the thought of this album being played on its namesake“ Petter laughs.
His description is not far-fetched. On Somewhere Safe xylophones are combined with melancholic harmonicas as well as acoustic guitars. It is cinematic quietness with grandeur.
“It might sound like a cliché but the music I make is a mix of pretty much everything that I listen to”, Stockholm resident Petter Lindhagen says.
With one foot in popmusic, Petter Lindhagen makes little genre experiments without ever losing a sense of the whole. Somewhere Safe is the sound of a truly unique artist who has created a sonic world of his own. Step right in.
Somewhere Safe has been released digitally and is out on Itunes, emusic, lala, amazon, deezer and spotify etc.

The Shills, Billy Bragg, the new album from Lucky Soul, Roky Erickson and Ovvervil River, The Joy Formidable. I'd like some more dirty noise pop if anyone has any reccomendations though.
Still playing the Beach House album to death, also re-investigating Faust and getting hooked on the various Soundway afro-beat, afro-funk compilations.

Currently listening to 'Meat Is Murder' by The Smiths.
I've also been enjoying Neil Young -'Unplugged' and Bob Mould's eponymous album on cassette in the car of late.

I saw Tim and Sam Band With Tim And Sam a few years back at Telford's Warehouse.
Glad they're making a bit of a name for themselves.
My favourite noisy band at the moment is Fucked Up.
If you want something a bit more post-hardcore than hardcore then Nation Of Ulysses springs to mind.
wow yeah thanks for the tip where can I download that, I might use it on my podcast like you suggested. Rhian and Andy i'll check your reccs out too, I like lo fi noisy stuff in the vein of japanandroids...
Curerntly enjoying Joanna Newsom, The Climbers, The Good Natured, Gindrinker, Theatre Royal, Japanandroids, Villagers(still), When The Clouds(good post rock/shoegaze stuffs), Venus Vee, Zwolf, Akira The Don, Ceri Frost
Mr Little Jeans - www.myspace.com/mrlittlejeans100 - tbh, if i try to describe it i'll probably make it sound terrible, but it's basically upbeat electro-pop with slightly more emphasis on the electro, some amazing beats in there
Clock Opera - www.myspace.com/clockopera - electro, a blinding remix of au revoir simone and one of hide me by the golden filter which is on the myspace
Memory Tapes - http://weirdtapes.blogspot.com - chillout dreamwave, they do some really good (and at the very least, interesting) mixes
Me: Drum Eyes, Her Name Is Calla, Nedry, Kutosis, Man Without Country, The Good Natured, Joanna Newsom, Wavves, Strangelove, and some more I featured on my podcast:
Bloodflowerbill wrote: Heh he so much news going up you seeeeeeeee! I'm well into all this noisy no wave/c86 inspired stuff at the moment. Anyone a fan of Wavves new album?
Well now you have the multi-tasking machine that is me, there is bound to be an increase in the news section ;)
Yeah I'm really loving this C-86 renaissance/homage that's going on at the mo...
Rhian, I'm also liking that dance/funk tune from Chromeo
rhian wrote: Yessss. New Wavves album = so great. Saw him at the 1234 festival last weekend too, sounded good live even with the terrible main stage sound.
Its a bugger we weren't on the bella union list earlier on, they thought we were but it was just simon :( oh well maybe we can sort a wavves review out...

http://www.myspace.com/wkwkwkwkwkwkwkwk - o0o00 - A lot of this witch house stuff is pretty dubious, these guys are awesome though, No Summr4u especially is a tuune.
http://www.myspace.com/tsdole - few listens in the album is sounding great, really delivers on the promise they've showed for so long.
http://www.myspace.com/kingpostkitsch - Loving this guys stuff, Walking on Eggshells in particular is amazing.
I was reviewing albums I'd bought earlier on in the air, you know just to listen to again, and I came across teen dream it's so brillant, great for rediscovery and it sounds more dense, thick compared to devotion.
i've been listening to quite a bit of alex winston lately too antonio - she's actually pretty decent isn't she! on paper it should be total shite, but i quite like her, she's got some nice melodies
I'm currently listening to my fourth podcast(the third and fourth will be recorded in the same session!) i'm putting togeether featuring: Grandchildren. Ace Bushy Striptease, the Strange Death of liberal england, 2:54, Gindrinker, Spectrals, Hail! The Planes, Ute, Union set sound, meursault, Eric Chenaux.
