Mr.Scruff – Wobble Control (Ninja Tune)

With its characteristic scrawled illustrated wobble dial cover, scribbled jaunty lettered title, ‘Wobble Control’, and wobbling quivering sound Mr.Scruff’‘s latest wizard wheeze tune, leaves little to the imagination – it does exactly what it sayes on the box so to speak.

Of course there’s also a warbling Mr.Ozio flavored flat-Eric style bass – warping and thrashing away – and some seasoned grinning knob-twiddling to contend with; adding some lo-rider flowing electro to the 4/4 indolent track. Other than that, it’s business as usual.

However, the adjoining tune, Music Takes Me Up, has a far more poppier house vibe to it: a track for those who find Groove Armanda a little too fey, and Basement Jaxx too obvious. UK soul singer extrodinare, Alice Russell lends her Lauryn Hill-esque tones and quality to the growling squelching synth-led soul tinged tune. It’s certainly a catchy enough record and will appeal to the club enviroment, but it’s pehaps a tad too evanescent and pedestrian for my own tastes.
