The Future Shape Of Now – Thinkin Bad Thoughts (Mostar Records)

the future shape of sound thinking bad thoughts

From the opening bars of Thinkin Bad Thoughts with its funky guitar riffs interspersed with Big Daddy Kai’s James Brown-esque vocal styling you know that this tune is onto a winning streak –think Curtis Mayfield’s genre-defining Superfly and you’re there. The effervescent vibe is pure party due in part to the ever present sound of the Hammond being bashed to death by an over-enthusiastic, Pentecost-driven keyboardist. The rest will have you Shake ‘N’ Finger-Popping whilst being transported back to an era where party-people really loved to dance Soul-Train style with abandon.

This single boasts a stellar line-up of musicians pilfered from other bands such as Arni Hjovar (The Vaccines) on bass, Jack Cowens (Dub Pistols) on drums, all headed up by Captain Future himself AKA Alex McGowan with powerhaus vocals from Nomtai Mabo.

Whether you choose to chair rock, do a Northern Soul shuffle, Go-Go Dance or even experiment with The Funky Chicken, one thing is clear, Thinkin Bad Thoughts is a tune that put the fun back into Funk. If music sounds this bad –as in good- it is no wonder the devil himself has claimed it as his own.
