We Were Promised Jetpacks Live gig

For the second time in 2011, I went along to see We Were Promised Jetpacks do what they do best; belt out their raw, powerful style of indie-rock, this time inside the tiny Norwich Arts Centre.

The band delivered another outstanding set, similar in most song choices to the show I saw at XOYO in October, however this time, with the addition of a few personal favourites from the debut album, they topped it.

The highlight came when Jetpacks played ‘Keeping Warm’, all eight minutes of it, a track that rewards the listener’s patience with an energetically soaring chorus that’s impossible not to dance to.

Plenty of material from the latest album ‘In The Pit of the Stomach’ featured and the likes of ‘Sore Thumb’ and ‘Circles & Squares’ thundered inside the venue. WWPJ are a fantastic live treat because their music is made to be performed at full pelt and at high volume.

The album closer ‘Pear Tree’ is also a perfect show-finale too, as the gentle build-up of the chorus and impressively powerful voice of frontman Adam Thompson (so powerful that he steps away from the mic’ for the track) leaves you feeling blown away before they say a humble thanks and goodbye.
