Preaching from the Pews: We Cut Corners

WCC

Irish duo We Cut Corners, write short sharp songs on drums and guitar. Their  debut album ‘Today I Realised I Could Go Home Backwards’ was released in Ireland in Nov 2011, and has since been short-listed as one of the ten Irish albums nominated for the Choice Music Prize for best Irish album of 2011.

The songs on their debut inhabit an individualistic place somewhere between the sensitive songsmithery of fellow Irish man Villagers and the schizo alt pop of The Crimea. Squealing feedback and monstrous drums of ‘Three People’ allow for a vocal of rare intensity that equates arson with seizing the moment (‘I need something to aspire: to setting fire too’) the power pop of ‘Go Easy’ houses a challenging personal/political paranoia, while The insistent crashing rhythms and frustrated streams of consciousness of ‘I am the Leopard’ delight and trouble in equal measures. Whilst the tender surrealism and quivering vocals of ‘Yet’ and closer ‘Are you a Mannequin’ will melt hearts.

We Cut Corners clever word play, surprising instrumental dexterity, at times absurd at others heartfelt lyricism, and catchy catchy tunes should see their profile ascend and burn brightly in coming months.

We Cut Corners plan to cross the Irish Sea, performing a select number of English dates at the start of April. With a frenetic buzz circulating around the duo in their homeland, and with a full UK album release date planned for mid 2012, this accomplished duo continue to showcase their assured, powerful sound and undeniable energy beyond their native shores, happily transfixing audiences along the way.
