Preaching From The Pews: Waxahatchee

The closest you can get to Waxahatchee Creek in Northern Alabama from the comfort of Google maps is a soft out of focus picture of a long road cutting through the tranquil River that runs through it. It was here during a harsh winter in 2011 Katie Crutchfield had returned to her parents house overlooking the lake to find herself after the break up of PS Eliot, the band formed with twin sister Alison (now part of Swearin who are rapidly gaining momentum after the release of their debut album) and the less amicable break up of a long relationship. The resulting album ‘American weekend’ was a stark, honest collection of Crutchfields feelings, shrouded in the comfort of her teenage bedroom.

Now expanded to a full band and signed to US punk label Don Giovanni records (Home of Alt-rock shredders Screaming Females and Grunge rockers California X) Waxahatchee released ‘Cerulean Salt’ last month to critical acclaim. Once again recorded in the solitude of her parents house overlooking that tranquil river ‘Cerulean Salt’ tackles themes of teenage loneliness and the emotional hurdles that your early twenties bring.

Finally coming to the UK to support Tegan and Sara on their European tour and headlining her own intimate show at the Shacklewell Arms on June 13th it promises to be something very special.
