RECORD STORE DAY STAFF PICKS 2013!
Three intrepid GIITTV staff members tag team up to deliver you some of the finest records set for release this Record Store day which takes place Saturday 2013!
Ben P Scott’s picks:
Punk legends The Fall are returning very soon with their 30th studio LP ‘Re-Mit’, which will be out on Cherry Red in April. There will also be a limited edition 7″ single for this year’s Record Store Day. ‘Sir William Wray’ and ‘Hittite Man’ are alternate versions of tracks from the forthcoming new album, while ‘Jetplane’ is exclusive to this release. There will be 1500 copies available worldwide.
Manchester indie icons the Inspiral Carpets are to release a special 7″ single via the O Genesis label, run by Charlatans frontman Tim Burgess. The two brand new tracks, ‘Fix Your Smile’ and ‘Save Me’ were recorded towards the end of 2011 in Manchester. The limited edition single will be available on Record Store Day, catalogue number OGen 034. The single is a taster of the band’s upcoming new album due for release later this year.
Paul Weller will issue a one-off double a-side single for Record Store Day UK 2013. The brand new tracks ‘Flame-Out!’ and ‘The Olde Original’ were recorded especially for the occasion and will be available on 7″ vinyl from your local independent record store on 20th April. Speaking about the single, Paul said “it’s great to do a record that’s released specifically for Record Store Day. There’s so few record shops left that we should all treasure those remaining.”
There will be 500 copies of a 7” single collaboration between Edwyn Collins and The Heartbreaks, recorded at West Heath Studios and released through AED Records. Side A is co-written in recent weeks, ‘What Are You Doing, Fool?’. The B side is a lovely duet of an Orange Juice classic, chosen by The Heartbreaks, ‘Untitled Melody.’
Pulp will release a 12″ of their new track ‘After You’, recorded last year with LCD Soundsystem‘s James Murphy. It comes backed with a remix by Soulwax.
Primal Scream are releasing a 12″ entitled simply ‘Record Store Day’. It features 2 covers, one of ‘I Want You’ by The Troggs, and The Sonic Rendezvous Band’s ‘City Slang’. It’s limited to 1280 copies. The song will also feature as bonus tracks on the Japanese version of the ‘More Light’ CD. Limited to 1280 copies for the UK and Eire and released on the band’s own First International label.

Personally I’ve eyed up the Krautrock duo of Conny Plank (The Conny Plank Rework Sessions 12”) and Can (Pavement’s inimitable front man, Stephen Malkmus, has a pop at the Cologne sonic magi’s Ege Bamyasi) tributes.
Other notable releases include Miles Davis’ 1957 LP Round About Midnight, a Fela Kuti 12” of Sorrow Tears And Blood/Perambulator, and the strange bedfellows, jamming assemble of Michael Horovitz, Damon Albarn, Graham Coxon and Paul Weller’s jazz poetry superjams (two 12” and an LP’s worth of material) sounds a shambling lark. There’s also a rather fetching 3xLP version of The Band’s swansong, The Last Waltz on offer.
If you haven’t tired of David Bowie by now then there’s a trio of 7” singles and an EP that may take your fancy: The Stars/WAWN, 1965, 1965! EP (limited to a 1000 copies) and Drive In Saturday.

At The Drive-In – Relationship of Command
Exclusive Re-issue for record store day, this 12” comes with the 11 classic tracks from their game changing 3rd album and two bonus tracks especially for RSD! This one should be snapped up quick so to make sure you don’t miss out on this beauty of a record, I advise camping out 3 days in advance.
Black Lips/ Icky Blossoms
One of the more interesting team up’s for RSD has to be garage punks Black Lips and electro pop trio Icky Blossoms. The split 7” has a theme of cowboys, with Black Lips covering Willie Nelson & Waylon Jennings duet ‘Mamas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys’ and Icky Blossoms taking on Siouxsie and the Banshees classic ‘Arabian Knights.’ There’s only 1,000 copies of this and on coloured vinyl (oooh!) so act fast.
GZA – Liquid Swords
This is the one I’m the most excited about, GZA from the Wu-Tang Clan’s second album being released on vinyl inside a 12×12 box that doubles up as a chess set (and even more surprises!) I have never played chess in my life and I never thought the GZA would be the one to have me queueing outside a record shop in the early hours of a rainy northern town to get my hands on a chess board, but there we are!
Half Japanese – Half Gentlemen Not Beasts
Half Japanese’s debut album is getting both the LP and CD treatment this RSD which is a true testament to how important this record is. Both formats will include extra material including tracks not originally available on HGNB and a 32 page booklet, with the vinyl also including a download card and an original Jad Fair poster (you’re never too old for a poster!)
Daniel Johnston – Fun
Daniel Johnston covering the band Fun. For RSD will be the perfect gift to get your loved one this RSD. (That sentence was a lie, it’s Daniel Johnston at his best with major label debut ‘fun.’) This album was produced by Butthole Surfers guitarist Paul Leary and was released whilst Johnston was holed up in a mental institute. Released for the first time on vinyl, go go go.
Kill Rock Stars – Cassette Compilation
This is one for all the people that have stayed loyal to the cassette format despite them now being more frowned upon than walking around with your hands down your pants. Only 500 have been made for this reissue so I should be putting you off buying this and then I’ll have more chance of holding one, but I’m a nice guy. Bands on the compilation include: Nirvana, Bratmobile, Courtney Love, The Nation of Ulysses, Unwound, Heavens to Betsy, Bikini Kill, Jad Fair, Melvins, Slant 6 and lots lots more, so if you can’t find your old cassette player get rummaging around the loft.
Bill Cumming’s RSD picks:
Ace cut and paste artists Public Service Broadcast release a limited edition 7″ single of their fine public road safety themed single Signal 30 for Record Store Day. It’ll be backed with recent free download New Dimensions In Sound and will all be on lovely orange vinyl.
They have also announced further good news, namely that they have been asked to appear at an in-store event at Rough Trade East on the big day itself. Here’s what they say about Record Stores and why they are so important:

There’s a brilliant looking Paint splatter vinyl reissue of The Jesus and Mary Chain classic Psychocandy with A3 reproduction early gig poster.Limited to just 1000 copies in the UK, The Mary Chain classic has been given a lick of splatter for RSD13 if you don’t already own it buy it, if you own it buy it again for that wonderful sleeve!
To celebrate the release of Ian McCulloch‘s new album package Holy Ghosts on April 22nd, this limited and numbered 7″ single Killing Moon/Pro Patria Mori (Reworks) pays homage to the original Echo and the Bunnymen Killing Moon sleeve and features unreleased live orchestral reworks of Mac’s tracks produced by Youth (known for his work with The Orb, Killing Joke, Depeche Mode and The Verve). McCulloch’s lived in voice lends a new quality of maturity and experience to his best Bunnymen/solo songs.
Music Is Dead Vol.1 features four distinctly exciting artists including The Natural,Spectres, Oliver Wilde and much talked about Velcro Hooks with a unheard version of Yesterday’s Man; a much rawer cut than the one found on their sell out EP Gymnophoria. . Housed, as always, in lovingly hand assembled packaging and bespoke artwork; limited numbers will be available at Rise Records Bristol and Rough Trade East, London. Bristol Label FOF Record’s release a six pronged assault on the senses this RSD(with Death Rattle, Kitchenettes and Ides) the pick for me are fast emerging outfit Casimir who are back to sneak you a track that didn’t make their EP this March, sample the wonderful ‘Like Whistles’ below they also do a neat line in cut and paste videoes. The RSD cut ‘The Entire History Of You’ is a rumbling reverb drenched dystopic number. With six emerging outfits on one release we suggest you get in on what FOF before everyone does!
North Walian noise making threesome The Joy Formidable release “A Minute’s Silence” as a limited edition 12” for Record Store Day. The 12” will be limited to 500 copies in the UK and available from all participating Record Store Day. It see’s JF take things down a notch or two with a haunting skeletal piano motif offering Ritzy’s impressive vocals to inhabit and shiver through affecting time stopping, poetic couplets….
“Architect” is a collaboration between Frightened Rabbit & Manchester Orchestra a show of mutual appreciation between the American and Edinburgh outfits, it’s a sublimely tender world weary cut that’s keening vocal harmonies and plucked arpeggios are the aural equivalent of giving each other great big man hugs around the camp fire, listen to it below.Available exclusively as a 12-inch single for Record Store Day, which will also include “Make It To Me,” a collaboration between Manchester Orchestra & Grouplove.
