Tracklist

1. The Milk Race – Miso Miso
The Milk Race
Swaggering out of the blocks in mid-2011, Cardiff’s The Milk Race set about adding a noisy description to a distinctly non-descript period in music. Taking the pure concept of the timeless power trio, the three moving parts that make up the mainframe of the band have proven form.

Singer and guitarist Chris Warlow used to lead the Sonic Youth-meets-Brainiac mayhem of The Martini Henry Rifles, lofty bassist and synth botherer Mike Carter was once of cult fuzz poppers Mo*Ho*Bish*O*Pi, while whirlwind drummer Chris ‘Sklav’ Sklavounos has played in too many bands to mention.

The trio are informed by a love of cycling and the power-pop of Cheap Trick, the fury of Fugazi and The Misfits, underscored by a healthy blast of synthy groove that mixes Man or Astroman? with Les Savy Fav’s mischief. Also present is an inherent commercial appeal inspired by the band’s love of skewed pop songs from past decades.

Their debut EP Rope Trick, produced by Exit_International’s Fudge Wilson at Sound Space Studios, features the spiky assault of Identify and the glorious Cribs-esque power-chord joy of Bonjour M.F. – inspired by a suitably sweary and near fatal cycling tour of northern France. Completed by the Wipers-meets-Girls Against Boys B-movie darkness of The Rise and Fall of the Indian Rope Trick, it all makes perfect sense.

2. The Lash – For Your Love (Yarbirds Cover)
thelash
The Lash are a 45,000 RPM rock & soul hurricane from Newport, South Wales, UK, featuring the astonishing vocal talents of Erin McNamara and former 60ft Dolls drummer Carl Bevan behind the kit and on production duties.

Formed in 2011, the quintet spent most of last year holed up writing and recording before exploding on the live scene in 2012.

Check out Rent, the band’s DIY debut video shot entirely on smartphones for a budget of £0: www.youtube.com/watch?v=higy71o6uwc
3. FLUTES – Solo Sleep

flutes logo
2012 was a busy year for Flutes with the release of their self-titled debut album. A flurry of online press ensued, which saw the band steadily build a loyal fanbase grabbing the attention of BBC Radio 1 Scotland, The Scottish Sun and, most recently, Clash Magazine, with Frightened Rabbit selecting their track ‘Auld Archie’ as a Track of the Day on the Clash website.

A track named after Camden town’s lesser known yet arguably more ferocious neighbour, Kilburn in the words of lead singer Godfrey McFall is “a song is about poets / artists / thespians always tending to gravitate to that horrid combination of womanisers and substance abusers, and with those come the associated highs and lows. As a band we’e all lived in Kilburn and it was fun (and mildly traumatising) to play with the imagery of Byron and Burns in a Kilburn boozer trying to have it off with the local ladies, then hating themselves for it in the morning”.

Forming on the windswept coast of Fife, the eight year musical story of the four-piece features a church hall in Oxford, corporate espionage, recording in sheds and industrial estates, the M6, an old white minibus, far too many London gigs circa 2007/08, grizzly old men, a BBC sound technician with a fetish for vintage microphones, big belly laughs, and a Scottish football stadium.Flutes release their second single taken from their self-titled debut album – Kilburn. The single is supported by the b-side ‘What Is Love’, a cover of Haddaway’s 90s dance hit. ‘What Is Love’ was released as a free download.

8. Science Bastard – Fly Island
science bastard photo
With a name like Science Bastard and a track titled “Cunt”, the Welsh contrarians are clearly not aiming for the mass market! But it’s a perfect name for a band that seamlessly blends experimental math rock (“Science”) with a punk attitude (“Bastard”) to create their own unique style of progressive punk.

Science Bastard combine the angular hardcore dynamics of At The Drive In with the aural menace of prime time P.I.L.

11. Nudy Bronque – All Sorts

nudybronque
Nudybronque are an Indie Pop band based in the heart of Wiltshire. The band blends Indie music with elements of Post-Punk and Britpop delivering a strange, yet fascinating live performance.

Their EP “Bottled Blonde” was released in mid 2012 and was greeted with fantastic reviews. It gained significant national airplay including the legendary Radio Caroline and BBC6 Music where Tom Robinson played them on two separate shows and claimed that they were “more than just another band with unfashionable hair”. Early 2013 saw Nudybronque release an out of character single entitled ‘Allsorts’ which is the first single from a follow up EP expected in the summer. The track was played across the world getting interest in Australia and the US and helped the band into the shortlists for the Glastonbury Festival Emerging Talent Competition.

There’s no doubt that this exciting, interesting, and somewhat bizarre threesome are going to spiral out into the music scene with the energy it takes to make an impression on the world.

17. OtherPeoplesLives – In Berlin
CP2-WR-205
From the bedroom writings and home-made recordings of ringleader Matthew Pease-Bower, OtherPeoplesLives were born from a desire to do something more artistic and idiosyncratic with music – a little more imagination and creative freedom was something that fellow founding member James Acornley had craved in a previous project and as a result of hearing a few new ideas, pressed for the pet-project to become a fully-fledged band.

After much searching for the right collective of people to work on the abundant demos and ideas, the duo found powerhouse drummer Bryce Gibson who in turn introduced them to multi-instrumentalist/ electronic producer Sam Ward. This four piece went into Loom Studios and found another multi-instrumentalist, Chris Siegel, engineering and admiring their work. The five members clicked there and then and haven’t looked back since.

OtherPeoplesLives take the honest songwriting of Pease-Bower and lift it to another level of power, deftness of dynamics and meticulousness. Each member bringing their own influences to an initial template, adding pulsing electronic undercurrents, articulate and intricate guitar lines and forceful, groove-laden drums to create the bands heady and at times intense blend of Post-Rock, Ambient Electronica and Art-Rock.

18. The Haunted Isles – Down to The Harbour (Gallon Drunk Cover)
photo
The Haunted Isles is the brainchild of former Bridport Dagger front man Jason Idnani-Powdrill. Dragging his chains across the floorboards like the ghoul in the attic these restrained, haunted narratives weave pleasingly through ethereal lo-fi-noir shuffles that conjures up the nightmarish spirit of early Birthday Party, the Spanish flecks of Calexico and the aching instrumentals and insidious melodrama of the Tindersticks early albums.‘Hauntology‘ is the self funded, bedroom recorded debut out now.

Rather enigmatically, TM O’Neill’s biography reads ‘There are only two kinds of music: good and the other kind’ – Duke Ellington. His new single Inbetweens is out April 29th.
