The Month Ahead – Warblings Of A Grumpy Old Man – May 2013

Springtime at last folks, when hopes and spirits get lifted, well let’s see how much I can dampen them. Starting on a high, there are three potentially fine new releases coming our way, via Noah And The Whale, The National and Middle Class Rut. There’s a whole lot more rubbish though, including past lightweights like Visage, Texas and Daft Punk. No reason to expect anything special from the grossly overrated Vampire Weekend and every reason to expect a crock of shit from Rod Stewart(Pictured above). Primal Scream might just throw a stunner at us, 30 Seconds To Mars almost certainly won’t.

The festival season starts to get underway, with loads of ‘em cropping up, again all bloody rubbish. Let’s Rock The Moor includes eighties hard rock bands like Five Star and Bananarama, whilst Osfest in Oswestry (you see what they did there?) includes some ex-X-Factorists, The Enemy and The Pigeon Detectives, say no more.

On the sporting front, the footie season draws to a close, making way for cricket for those of you in need of a life. There’s the Ice Hockey World Championships and Rugby Union’s Heineken Cup Final. For those into our new national sport, cycling, there’s the Giro D’Italia which drags on all bleeding month.

If you’re not into sport, there’s the Grand Prix or the Chelsea Flower Show. Don’t forget Mother’s day and a couple of weirdies like No Socks Day and Chicken Dance Day. There’s International No Diet Day and Play Your Ukelele Day and wouldn’t it be nice to commemorate the two by Eddie Vedder collaborating with Adele? No it wouldn’t. If you’re a real saddo and cricket and flowers don’t make you quiver in your plimsolls, there’s Star Wars Day coming up too. Then we have Goth Day, which sounds a great opportunity to dig out my Sisters Of Mercy albums.

All up then, quite a bit to get to grips with, some of it fairly interesting, well not much of it really. If you can survive it, then I’ll spout at you again in a month, provided I manage to drag myself away from Oswestry in time. Don’t have nightmares.
