The Body – Christs, Redeemers (Thrill Jockey)

Make no mistake, this is not an easy listen. Brutal would be a start, but that doesn’t fully cover it either. For all its volatile screaming and thrashing, ludicrously heavy drums and equally threatening distorted deep guitar Christs, Redeemers has just as many sections of incredible beauty.

Chip King (guitars/vocals) and Lee Buford (drums/ programming) make music like no other; it’s heavy, it’s loud and it’s pretty god damn evil at points truth be told. Having released an EP earlier in the year, this full length continues their endeavour, taking the Metal mould and forging to it elements of electronic along with religious and spiritually themed chants. Ethereal female vocals supplied by frequent collaborators and friends which include the Assembly of Light Choir on opening track ‘To Attempt Openness’ are also sprinkled throughout the album adding a softer side to the duo’s doom and hatred.

There are moments of genuine terror contained within these ten tracks, and The Body are masters at creating suspenseful, intense intervals only to pierce it again with deafening force.

This album will demand your attention.
