Ahh the real meaning of Christmas and I’m not talking about flat screen TVs, obscene consumerism, gluttonous levels of eating, endless repeats on telly or even its religious origins. I am talking about the warm glow of family and the sense of relaxing and that indefinable sometimes joyous sometimes wistful: feeling of celebrating that another year is over and a new one will arrive soon enough.
Folk pop trio Provincials‘s charmingly seasonal cover of the 1975 Big Star song ‘Jesus Christ’ evokes all of these feelings. It’s almost 50s, stripped back alternative hymn like quality is imbued with Polly Perry’s haunting vocals an understated Rickenbacker riff and a traditional message. It’s taken from their new EP ‘When the Light Changes’, available on CD & DL from www.provincials.co.uk and iTunes.
