Matthew E. White is back. In 2012 the man from Richmond, Virginia was tall in the saddle as he first rode into our consciousness with his debut album, the magnificent cosmic country opus Big Inner. Now he has returned with news of its follow up, Fresh Blood, and to herald its arrival in a little less than two months’ time he has unveiled the first full single from it, ‘Rock & Roll Is Cold’.
White says that “‘Rock & Roll Is Cold’ is about how we continue to take the most vibrant, soulful, deep music and make it a caricature of itself. We look into it, force it to turn in on itself, force it to turn back on itself, and we lose the source, we lose the mystery, the magic, and we seem to be unaware that any of that is even happening.“
Yet for all that Matthew E. White appears to parody some of the great contemporary musical genres on ‘Rock & Roll Is Cold’, with its relentless piano-driven melody, insurgent vocal harmonies and parping horns the song sure is as catchy as hell and promises much for the new album.
To coincide with the release of Fresh Blood in early March, Matthew E. White will perform three dates on either side of the Atlantic, returning the following month for seven full-band shows in the UK.
