Hip hop fans should prepare to have their minds blown with the announcement that Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def) will take to London’s Indigo2 on 11th of June to perform tracks from the back catalogue of legendary producer Jay Dilla.
Dilla has been immortalised as one of hip hop’s greats; collaborating with the likes of A Tribe Called Quest, Busta Rhymes, Madlib, D’Angelo, MF DOOM, The Pharcyde and of course Yasiin Bey. Since his tragic death in 2006, a swathe of posthumous releases has seen a renewed interest in his work and his cult like following grow considerably.
Yasiin Bey himself has been responsible for bringing some of Dilla’s work to light after the producer’s death, notably using his beats on Mos Def tracks ‘History’ (2009) and ‘Sunshine Screwface’ (2012). Bey’s understanding of the life and work of Dilla makes him the ideal candidate to lead a celebration of an extraordinary musician’s legacy.
