Friday 12th June 2015 23:00 – Son Lux, the alter ego of New York based musician Ryan Lott, returns with his fifth album in seven years, and this time around it sounds as though Arcade Fire have teamed up with Talking Heads after an evening sharing mind-expanding drugs.
I only wish ‘Bones’ was half as interesting as I just made it sound…
Saturday 13th June 2015 10:03 – I wrote those two sentences on Friday evening, having imbibed a fair amount of alcohol. This morning I am completely sober and am more than a little baffled as to how I came to that Talking Heads reference. It sounds as much like David Byrne and his cohorts as I look like Fatima Whitbread. No, before you ask.
Still, I can see how I made the Arcade Fire reference, since Lott’s voice has that same dramatic quaver that permeates much of Win Butler’s work. A fairer description of the new album would perhaps have been the late Gavin Clark (Clayhill, UNKLE) and Butler, lost in the Amazonian rainforest with a sheepish Matt Bellamy as a flummoxed tour guide. If that sounds unrealistic, give me a bit longer and maybe I’ll come up with something different tomorrow…
Sunday 14th June 2015 18:00 Stephen is playing Pin The Tail On The Donkey. The other housemates are clapping like seals and making honking noises. Except for Sylvia, who is sulking in the kitchen after Nathan stole her biscuit.
Monday 15th June 2015 11:15 You know, I think it’s becoming pretty apparent that I am struggling with this review. I no longer think the album is dull, it just takes a bit of getting used to. It’s kind of orchestral, but not really. It sounds ethereal but not that much. It’s like classical music mixed with prog and electronica, yet it doesn’t sound classical at all and doesn’t meander anywhere near as much as prog. And to be fair, the electronica is minimal. I think I’m going to cry.
