Track Of The Day #889: James Leonard Hewitson – Care Less, Love Less

For anyone who’s had the pleasure of seeing the new incarnation of The Chapman Family’s Kingsley Chapman (Kingsley Chapman and the Murder), then Hartlepool native James Leonard Hewitson might seem quite familiar.  He plays trumpet for the doom-laden baroque pop project, but he’s also been hard at work on his own too.  Alongside running his own label, Endearment Records, putting on his own gigs and hosting a weekly quiz in a Hartlepudlian deli, Hewitson is also about to release his first official solo single.  And as might be expected from the emerging polymath, it’s a doozy.

Care Less, Love Less’ draws heavily on some of Hewitson’s major influences, including Black Lips and The Moldy Peaches’ Adam Green.  It’s a distinctly Northern shot in the arm for typical American slacker rock, with Hewitson’s laid-back, nonchalant vocals and witty lyrics mixing with layers of fuzzy guitars to create a very full, yet still lo-fi sound.  If Hewitson keeps producing gems like this, that deli might have to find a new quizmaster soon.

Care Less, Love Less’ is released on Endearment Records on 15th July.
