A key creative hub and music venue, Salford’s Islington Mill is set to undergo a renovation thanks to a new grant from Arts Council England. The venue is receiving £928,000 from the Council, which will go towards the total £2.5m needed for the entire refurbishment project. Salford Council have already pledged £400,000 and, with donations from other benefactors, the Mill’s current funding comes to £1.76m.
The plans for renovation include a transformation of the derelict fifth floor and attic space to create eight new artist and maker spaces, offering year round accommodation and workspaces for artists around the world. They also plan to make room for large-scale work and include more exhibition space.
As a dedicated music venue, hosting the Sounds from the Other City Festival as well as playing host to gigs by experimentalists Sax Ruins, Father Murphy and Laura Cannell & Marisa Anderson in the coming months, the refurbishment may also have a positive knock-on impact on the amount of music events the Mill can host. They’re also the home of Manchester krautrock band Gnod.
