Track Of The Day #918: Maggie8 – Connected

Well, wouldn’t you just know it? Those good people at Come Play With Me have only gone and done it again.  Originally set up “to offer artist development opportunities to those making music within the Leeds City Region,” Come Play With Me’s very first project was a singles’ club.  And now the Leeds-based social enterprise is about to release the fourth such record in its most estimable series.

First came Harkin and Cinerama, and then there was Fizzy Blood and OFFICERS, before earlier this year ZoZo and Esper Scout emerged out of the Come Play With Me factory.  Each and every one of them a firm statement of popular music’s intent to entertain.  Now it is the turn of local outfits Maggie8 and Ceiling Demons to continue in that grand tradition.

For their part in this latest 7” split, Maggie8 – comprising Nivedita Pisharoty, Mark Wright, Peter Mottram & Matt Flint – contribute the dazzling ‘Connected’.  Talking about the song’s genesis, the band explain that “Connected was written after the break-up of another Maggie8 line-up.  It can be a sad time but also it’s a natural part of being in a band.  You make connections that last forever but not always in the same vicinity.  It’s the burning of the heather to promote fresh shoots.”

And ‘Connected’ does sound fresh, as fresh as a mountain stream in fact if such a thing were to flow through the very heart of West Yorkshire.  It sparkles and fizzes, hurtling along, as it hitches the spirit of those early ’80s post-punk upstarts Altered Images to the most charming and contagious of melodies.  This song surely deserves to be a hit.

The Maggie8 and Celling Demons split single is released on 23rd September 2016.  The single launch, featuring both bands, will take place the night before at Leeds’ famous Brudenell Social Club
