Danish alt-pop group Lowly have revealed that they’re set to release their long-awaited debut album Heba on 10th February via Bella Union. The band combine synths, laptops and guitars into shapeshifting, layered and complex creations that’s all been mixed by Anders Boll, Efterklang’s engineer and sound man.
While the album’s title references a Syrian friend of theirs, they say “we are not a particularly political band, but we recorded the album while thousands of people were fleeing and getting killed. The frustration of Europe and our own country being unwilling to help, and bureaucracy being valued higher than human lives, affected us deeply. There are lyrics about that, but also your average love song, which Heba also is a symbol of.”
To coincide with the announcement, the band are streaming their new single ‘Word.’ Like much of the Danes’ output, it almost defies categorisation but is also as tightly constructed as any modern pop song, making it an deeply intriguing track that demands you listen again and again. Listen below.
