It’s only been a couple of months since US garage rock duo Bearcats released their last EP Candy, but Lisa Harrison and Lexi McCoy are already back with a new EP. Break Up Stories, released as a split release between Frux Tapes and Lost State Records, is more of an attempt to capture the energy of their live shows and sessions, and as such it’s a bit of a scuzzier and rawer EP on the whole.
McCoy and Harrison’s three new tracks on the collection are unusual in that they only use bass and drums, as well as harmonies, giving them a particularly distinctive sound that’s very DIY but breaks the mould of usual punk bands. While it might take a bit of getting used to for those of us used to hearing guitars take the lead on a post-punk record, Break Up Stories reveals itself to be like a stripped back, homemade version of X-Ray Spex or Siouxsie and the Banshees. They’re proving that sometimes less is most definitely more.
