PREVIEW: forthcoming shows from Please Please You

Seasons may come and seasons may go but the Please Please You gig juggernaut just seems to keep on keeping on. Having recently celebrated its 12th anniversary of bringing high-class alternative musical entertainment to the North East of England and beyond, 2017 continues to be the York-based promoter’s busiest year yet.

Hot on the heels of what have been some really fantastic shows this year already – Promised Land Sound, Bill Ryder-Jones, The Gories, and Hurray For The Riff Raff all spring very readily to mind – Please Please You has many more great gigs in store for us in the run-up to Christmas. As summer turns into autumn here are just some of the selected highlights of what we can expect to see and hear in the next few months:

On the 17th of September the highly regarded classically-trained Glasgow-based singer-songwriter and Song, By Toad recording artist Siobhan Wilson brings her mercurial and considerable talent to The Basement in York.

Three nights later in the same location deep in the bowels of the City Screen cinema and right on the banks of the River Ouse, Please Please You welcomes John Murry to York. The American musician with a blurred history of self-destruction and subsequent recovery will bring to us his ruinous songs of unflinching heartbreak and uplifting redemption.

The following night just down the road apiece at The Crescent Community Venue, New York’s Endless Boogie will warm up for their appearance at Liverpool International Festival of Psychedelia the very next day. Expect an uncompromising lesson in how best to meld the elements of psychedelia, garage rock and the blues. This promises to be something else altogether. You have been warned.

Come October and cometh the man, Matthew E. White. The renowned producer, arranger, and founder of the wonderful Spacebomb Records from Richmond, Virginia will be making a rare solo appearance at The Crescent in what should be “an intimate evening previewing works in progress and older classics”.

Between then and the end of November there is a whacking total of 13 more Please Please You shows coming to us each and every one of which perfectly illustrates the diverse range and highest quality of music that this independent live music promoter will be presenting in York, Leeds and Manchester in the coming months.

Keep a particular eye out for those perennial post-punk pioneers Wire at The Crescent at the tail-end of October, The Dream Syndicate – the classic guitar band from the 1980s and Los Angeles, California – with the collective talents of Steve Wynn, Mark Walton, Dennis Duck and The Miracle 3’s Jason Victor, who will be playing their only UK only show outside of London at the Brudenell Social Club in Leeds a few days later, and then there is a most welcome return to York of Blue Rose Code, the musical project of Ross Wilson who provided the absolute musical highlight of this year’s Cambridge Folk Festival. They will be performing at The Basement on the 8th of November as a trio and be playing songs from their forthcoming album which is due to be released later that month.
