Video Of The Week #66: Halo Maud – Du Pouvoir/Power

Lifted from her debut EP the title track Du Pouvoir/Power is French artist Halo Maud on entrancing form. Twitching pops, playful celestial keyboard lines and sumptuous vocals the ghosts of Broadcast linger, but this is a see-sawing melody that’s at once familiar of pop music yet exploring with its aimless wandering and self-discovery. In a week where we celebrate International Women’s Day, this sounds divine and is accompanied by an intoxicating visual centred on a striking artist.

This is the precursor to Halo Maud’s debut album, Je Suis Une île due 25th May on Heavenly Recordings.

Originally out on her Canadian label Michel Records back in March 2017, the tracks on the EP are the product of solo experiments alongside collaborations with Maxime Le Guil (Camille, Radiohead, Soko), and Robin Leduc.

Maud says of the EP, “It is all about the beginning and the end: Baptism being the second birth (START), Du Pouvoir dealing with self-confidence and how to find your place in the world (CONSTRUCTION), and À La Fin (literally “At The END”), about what we keep and lose after love has gone. Dans La Nuit is actually the very first song I wrote in French, and has all been written during the night, and dans la nuit, we float, we escape until the next day is coming. The fact that I finally refused to choose between French and English ended up making sense when I signed to Heavenly Recordings, a double sign from heaven!”
