John Adams – No White Lies EP (Tristar Records)

Having supported the likes of Take That and Lemar on tour, John Adams has racked up a considerable following across social media platforms and is now extending his reach and audience with the release of his new EP No White Lies.

The vibrancy and energy to Adams’ vocal on opening track ‘First Line’ makes for a good, strong start, and lyrically evoked images in my mind of the song’s protagonist struggling with conflicting emotions about relationships and pouring their heart out in an attempt to make sense of them: “We are lost in different stories, we are books on different shelves…maybe we should stop pretending.”

New single ‘Million Lives’ is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have personally heard in some time, and there’s a poignancy to some of the lyrics which will no doubt ring true with a vast number of those who give the track a listen.

‘Flames’ meanwhile is undoubtedly the highlight of this five track collection and showcases Adams’ impressive song-writing capability, but it’s the oh-so-smooth vocal, together with a stunning piano arrangement, that really stands out – press play, sit back and you’ll understand what I mean.

EP title track ‘No White Lies’ is based around the story of a couple going through a rough patch – yet another moment many will find themselves relating to – and John sings about how lies can be okay as they don’t often truly hurt, but also reminds listeners that there is one little fib that can really do damage: “Please don’t say you love me if the words aren’t from your heart.” While many people, and even other artists, might dance around trying to put such a statement – a request almost – so bluntly, Adams shows so hesitation in doing so, meaning the song serves as a simple yet strong reminder to everyone not to play with the hearts of those around them.

The rather captivating, hypnotizing ballad that is ‘Him’ closes out the collection with another few minutes of emotion for the listener to lose themselves in. This one focuses on how it feels to lose the one you love from your life, but also, despite the pain, wanting that someone to be happy as they move on: “Please don’t think of me, I had my chance to be Him.”

Adams’ EP reflects many incidents and moments in life that can and do impact so many of us. With that in mind, this collection may find itself lingering in the hearts and minds of those who hear it for some time – and that’s not at all a bad thing.

No White Lies is out now on Tristar Records.
