EXCLUSIVE: .gif debut enveloping new single ‘My Darling’

Singapore pop duo .gif reveal their haunting new track ‘My Darling.’ Its lifted from forthcoming album ‘Hail Nothing’ due 24th April.

My Darling‘ ripples with swelling paranoia the growing march of synthesiser arpeggiation underscored by Din’s flickering beats and invested with a growing intensity of Weish’s enveloping vocal refrains. Elastic and daring it oscillates somewhere between early Bjork and Portishead, it’s an impressive release, that we are premiering below.

They say:
MY DARLING was written in a toilet during a panic attack. It is a song you cradle in your chest, curled up with your back to the bathroom door. The song made its live debut at our recent form-bending multi-disciplinary production ‘Beside Ourselves’ – a commission for the M1 Singapore Fringe Festival.”

Singapore based alternative electronic duo .gif (Weish and Din) create reflective and expansive pop music, imbued with a sense of melancholy awashed in intoxicating synths, inviting you into a deeply personal experience as evident in the new album ‘Hail Nothing’ due this April. Drawing on a myriad of influences from ambient, pop, electronic and R&B, the band preempt its release with a haunting new track ‘My Darling’.

They say: “HAIL NOTHING sits in its own little space between trip–hop, post punk and slow driving techno. If our previous albums were The Smiths, this album is Joy Division. It is also our love song to the void; an ode to chaos and nothingness.”

HAIL NOTHING, however, .gif “imagine Sisyphus happy”, as Albert Camus famously wrote in The Myth of Sisyphus. Where their previous work––saudade EP and soma LP––had been defined by a rainy–day despair and a longing for purpose, their new album is an aggressive attempt to break free from melancholy. A more joyful approach to existential dread, HAIL NOTHING embraces the absence––or inscrutability of––meaning as something not cruel or suffocating, but liberating.
