EXCLUSIVE: Donna Blue debut cinematic video for French pop of ‘Solitaire’

Donna Blue release their new single ‘Solitaire‘ today. It’s taken from their upcoming debut album ‘Dark Roses‘, set for release on 13th May. ‘Solitaire’ is accompanied by a widescreen video shot in the mountains and coves of Mallorca, which we are debuting below.

Solitaire is the second single off their upcoming debut album, a French yé yé / film composer John Barry inspired song about lovers at sea, heading towards an ominous storm. When the wind takes over, all they can do is surrender, whisper a prayer to the moon and wait for it to pass.

In part, it is a song about the apathy that can set in when too much bad news is coming your way but it’s also about escape and letting it pass. With its deliciously evocative vocals, twangy guitars and impish instrumentation, it’s a sound that delves back to the likes of Nancy & Lee, Serge Gainsbourg and Julee Cruise – whilst also drawing inspiration from film composers such as Ennio Morricone and Piero Piccioni.

‘Solitaire’ could be the soundtrack to an imaginary ‘60s film, and the accompanying video shares this nostalgic sentiment. The duo explains:

“For the video, we wanted to dive more into storytelling. We envisioned a scene of apparent paradise, much like Godard’s ‘Pierrot Le Fou’, which we found in the mountains and coves of Mallorca. We wore only red, white and blue as an ode to the French lyric, added in a bit of magical realism, and a blue-haired mermaid inspired by ‘Rusalochka’.”

After three critically acclaimed EP’s, Donna Blue now announce their debut album ‘Dark Roses’, a film score-esque collection of 11 dreamlike tracks. The duo, originally from the Netherlands, has an international outlook having toured extensively across Europe.

‘Solitaire’ is now available on Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, Deezer, iTunes and Bandcamp. You can watch the video for
