Video Of The Week #224: HAAi – Purple Jelly Disc (ft. Obi Franky)

HAAi – aka Teneil Throssell – shared a brand new single ‘Purple Jelly Disc’(ft. London-based singer Obi Franky) last week and it’s an astounding trip.

Taken from her highly anticipated forthcoming debut Baby, We’re Ascending, out on Mute this May 27th, it comes with a mind-melting video created by The Horror’s Tom Furse, like getting lost in a series of magic eye pictures, this multicoloured spiral through a warped reality fits the songs shapeshifting rhythms and melodic fragments. Journeying from breakbeats and ominous instruction, into thumping anthemic rush carried aloft by Obi Franky’s effecting and emotive vocal refrains (“it’s a feeling I just can’t escape”). While wobbly synths and stretched voices bleed into a belting single, it’s how one might imagine the ecstatic heady high might feel.

With the rave revival already in full swing, HAAi harks back to the early 90s but retools it for 2022, fusing elements of techno, house, drum n bass, downtempo and anthemic electro into a striking vision.

2022 is already shaping up to be a landmark year for Melbourne’s HAAi. In the last few months alone, released both new single Bodies of Water & the critically acclaimed collaboration lights out with friends Romy (xx) & Fred Again… and played dates in Australia, Belfast, Lyon, Brighton and Istanbul’s Sonar Festival. Additionally, she’s just announced her debut US tour including a very special date at Detroit’s legendary Movement on the 30th May.

With community and collaboration being a key theme running the LP, Baby, We’re Ascending features an all-star line-up of contributors including Jon Hopkins, Alexis Taylor, Moxie, and Obi Franky. Additionally, Teneil chose to craft the album alongside a roster of exceptional female and non-binary creatives including designer Raissa Pardini, mixing engineer Marta Salogni  (Björk, Romy), engineer/producer Francine Perry, string arranger Quinta, and creative director & long-time collaborator Imogene Barron.
