Canadian sibling quartet The Garrys new single, ‘Cakewalk’ is out today and it weaves a charming, dreamy “doom-wop” garage surf sound, sewn with criss-crossing guitar riffs and a three-part braid of harmony underpinned by a rhythmic stutter.Today we are debuting the accompanying music video below, a Lynchian take on a TV variety show, inspired by found footage of a 1988 Miss Saskatoon beauty pageant brimming shoulder-pad glamour and soft-focus romance. They say: “On ‘Cakewalk’ we weave crisscrossing guitar riffs and a three-part braid of harmony with the rhythmic stutter and warm analog warble of a well-loved VHS tape. Lyrically, the track explores the nuggets of good advice we’ve all ignored, the existential discomfort of holding multiple truths, and the stoic relief of resignation to an indifferent universe – sounds easy enough, right?”‘Cakewalk’ marks the first new music since 2021’s Get Thee To A Nunnery and the first release since the trio of Lenore, Julie, and Erica Maier recruited their brother Matthew on guitar. The Garrys will be taking their hazy sun-bleached melodies on the road to the UK. Having played The Great Escape in 2018 and 2022, The Garrys are ready to retake the UK by storm with three sets at FOCUS Wales and stops in Dublin and Glasgow.Born out of the coldest part of landlocked Canada, The Garrys formed in the spring of 2015 and named themselves after their father, Garry. The trio debuted with Warm Buds in 2016, a lo-fi record that established what would become the band’s signature woozy garage-surf sound. The sister trio have since recruited their brother Matthew Maier to join the family fun, but only after the band’s last album, Get Thee To The Nunnery. Get Thee To The Nunnery won them a 2022 Western Canadian Music Award in the category of Breakout Artist of the Year, as well as Alternative Artist of the Year in the Saskatchewan Music Awards the same year.UK LIVE DATESMAY5th: ANSEO – DUBLIN, IRELAND
