EXCLUSIVE: M. Vaughan ‘Cold Read’ Single Premiere

M. Vaughan returns on June 14th’s with his new EP ‘Keep in Touch’ EP. It finds the Portugal-via-New York producer moving away from the club and towards the emotional Indie of his roots with a sound for fans of Mount Kimbie and Blood Orange.

Today, we are debuting his new single ‘Cold Read’ below it’s out tomorrow. An inventive tapestry of electro indie pop, littered with evocative, wistful melodies, cathartic synths and a undulating sonic, that’s sewn with fascinatingly intricate and cinematic detail.

He says:”I wrote Cold Read here in Lisbon in February 2024. My mom, who lives in Vermont, was auditioning for this play and we would facetime and review her script and mark it up together and I was really rooting for her. At the same time, I was sober and life was good and clean and rote and I just wanted to knock over a pedestrian to give things some color again. The synth solo at the end was this massive cathartic release for me, I recorded it about 20 times, shoved it through a guitar amp, triple tracked it, processed the hell out of it. I really had a blast making this one.”

The Lisbon via New York artist M. Vaughan grew up playing in Indie Rock bands before spending a decade crafting Electronic music, with his productions on labels like FreerangeMonologues, and his own Super Tuff imprint earning praise from top publications and DJs alike. In 2021 he relocated to Berlin but soon began to feel detached from the Dance scene.

Drawing on early inspirations from back home like The MicrophonesMark Kozelek, and Alex G, he began working on the ‘Keep in Touch’ EP. After relocating to Lisbon in 2023, Vaughan continued to experiment with his sound, merging elements of his club music foundations with influences from genre-bending acts like Mount KimbieTirzah, and Blood Orange‘Keep in Touch’ is Vaughan’s full-circle musical coda, a portrait of an artist in metamorphosis, with his heartache hanging out while stepping into the uncertain once again.
