RATTLE (aka Katharine Eira Brown and Theresa Wrigley) announce the release of their third album Encircle on 28th February via Upset the Rhythm. It sees the Nottingham drumming duo expand their unique experiments in rhythm, metre and tension across four spellbinding extended tracks, honed over the last few years by being played live.
Their latest single ‘Ritual‘ is hypnotic, tribal, celestial, fierce, earthy, elegant and transcendental. They echo the universal human heartbeat with their driving dual drums, ebbing and flowing like shamans, channelling lush melismatic harmonies and slanted impressionistic lyrics. It’s trance-like and sublime.
Album opener, ‘Ritual’, is inspired by Boleskin House in Scotland, once inhabited by Aleister Crowley, which Katharine discovered when on tour with her other band Kogumaza. “The house was in ruins following a, or several, fires, and was inhabited” she explains. “It was misty April day and the view from the terrace was Loch Ness with rising mist, which snaked up into the cemetery in front of the house. It was incredibly eerie and easy to imagine Crowley conducting his rituals.”
As is RATTLE’s unique style, ‘Ritual’ is led by their often-wordless mesmerising vocals and hypnotic double-drum set-up built around a simple snare drum pattern played by Katharine, overlapped with a second snare by Theresa creating an elliptical feel. Described by Katharine as “A sort of a waltz, and a very earthy song – lots of low-lying mist on the ground swirling around and the drums coming together to summon something!”
The otherworldly, ritualistic video for ‘Ritual’ was created alongside Shropshire-based illustrator Liv Bargman with its magical objects donated to the shoot by Chris Tipton of RATTLE’s label Upset the Rhythm.
“We were so happy to make a video for Ritual on the coldest day of the year at the beautiful City Racing art gallery in Bishops Castle” explains Katharine. “We were excited to see Chris Tipton’s fascinating collection of magical objects and to collaborate with Liv Bargman, an illustrator well known for her colourful and dynamic illustrations full of movement and magical situations – and to capture her dancing and swirling line as it is being drawn.”
RATTLE pay homepage to the City Racing art gallery where the video was filmed by playing a special one-off performance there on the 23rd February where they will present their big band formation, with an extended lineup of percussion and voices, with RATTLE performing tracks from Encircle as well as from their previous two critically acclaimed albums.
RATTLE has performed at The Barbican, London and toured the UK with Animal Collective and Thurston Moore Group and Europe with The Julie Ruin and Protomartyr, and performed with Hot Snakes, Bill Orcutt Quartet and Codiene.
Latest album Encircle is released on 28th February 2025 on Upset the Rhythm and will be available on vinyl, CD and digitally. These songs are alive with elemental power so be sure to check them out.
