EXCLUSIVE: Andrew Butler- ‘Nothing New’ Video Premiere

Andrew Butler is a Singer-Songwriter based in Stroud, UK. His music weaves enchanting melodies, introspective lyrics and a voice that is powerful in its vulnerability, into seamless sonic expressions of the soul. Butler plays a mystical and melancholic mixture of alternative, Folk and Blues, combined with rich emotive vocals that stylishly slice the silence and slant over delicate finger-picked melodies. His voice is powerful in its vulnerability making his music urgent yet fused with nostalgia. His lyrics delve deep into the psyche and range from heart on sleeve confessionals to abstract dream like collages.

Traces of Jeff Buckley, Elliott Smith and Leonard Cohen can be heard in his songs alongside elements of Folk, Rock, Classical and Blues. Butler fuses all his influences and experiences together into a distinctly original sound and carves out his own unique space on the songwriting spectrum. His discography includes the E.P. ‘February 14th’ released on Folkroom Records, debut album ‘Chalk‘, which received airplay on Guy Garvey’s BBC Radio 6 show and his second album ‘Songs From The Underworld’ which was entirely self-produced and recorded.

Today GIITTV are delighted to Premiere his latest video, ‘Nothing New.’ It’s the first to be taken from his upcoming album, I’m Sorry For Bringing You Down which will be released on 16th May.

Directed by Artist and Curator Fiona Irene Graf and filmed in Finland, Germany and the UK, the video is an abstract journey through a person’s mind who is trying to come to terms with the harsh truths of life and the realisation that nothing much changes over the course of human existence.

The song explores the intense duality between optimism and defeatism that can take place in the face of overwhelming socio-political issues. This dilemma is intimately brought to light by a subtle arrangement of intricate finger-picked guitar, impassioned vocals and a distant ghostly synth.

All these elements form a melodic tide that gently comes to the calming waves of the chorus and the sobering conclusion that there is nothing new under the sun.

The third album ‘I’m Sorry For Bringing You Down’ due on 16th May, delves into Butler’s psyche as he seeks to draw strength and make sense of feelings of loss and the unpredictable world that surrounds him.

From memories and emotions about grief and addiction, to the challenges of losing love and faith in the midst of an uncertain political climate.

These themes are highlighted by honest, insightful lyrics which are brought to life by Butler’s diverse vocal delivery, ranging from tender whisper, soulful croon and wailing howl. They are further enhanced by catchy yet complex guitar melodies and a purposefully stark and thoughtful arrangement.

Recorded in Stroud and Germany over the span of two years, this second self-produced record showcases not only Butler’s increased confidence as a songwriter but also as a musician and producer.
